Bradbury Thompson reincarnate
Everytime I see this magazine cover I am reminded of Bradbury Thompson's work in the late 50s-70s. The overlap/translucency of the letters and shapes were very en vogue, after Bradbury introduced this tecnique on a grand scale. For examples on Thompson's work, I'd visit this page.

I definitely agree... if you look at his work, you can see the connection the use of bold font and color choices that this magazine cover utilizes. It's not an exact replica but it has a nice modern touch with the shiney reflection effect.
After visiting "this page" I totally remember his style of work, and you are correct in that it relates to the cover of this magazine! The overlapping of the very basic, but bold colors in "500" reminds me of his works where he separated out the CMYK colors to create solid colored images.
It's very modern, yet it does appear as a throwback to the 50s-70s like you said. But, if you think about it, this shows that the styles of the past are able to be brought back and used in a more "modern" way today. History repeats itself, even in design.
I totally agree, this resembles his work... and yet it still looks modern! The colors are very basic, like his work, and yet when I saw this I was like what era is this from... because it's that well incorporated.
